L.T.C. (Long-Term Care) is a highly important, overlooked and increasingly needed type of insurance that includes a broad range of medical and personal services for someone who is in need of assistance with the Activities of Daily Living (known as A.D.L.’s), for an extended period of time. These needs can be due to physical and/ or mental illness frequently brought on by the process of aging and disease. Basically, L.T.C. provides a daily dollar amount for the insured to aid them with the high expenses of home health care (Caregivers), respite care, adult-day care, nursing home care and care in a assisted living facility. It is important to consider that neither Medicare nor Medicare supplement insurance covers L.T.C.
The Six Activities of Daily Living (A.D.L.’s) are as follows:
- Bathing and showering.
- Personal hygiene and grooming (including brushing/combing/styling hair).
- Dressing.
- Toilet hygiene (getting to the toilet, cleaning oneself, and getting back up).
- Functional mobility, often referred to as “transferring”, as measured by the ability to walk, get in and out of bed, and get into and out of a chair.
- Self-feeding (not including cooking, or chewing and swallowing).
